It may sound as though putting a strap on a guitar is a simple task, but it’s definitely worth learning how to do it the right way. Not only will a guitar strap that’s been properly attached to your guitar keep your guitar in a safe condition, but it will also keep your body in the right condition.
Classes in summer programs in Pearland, TX, can be a great place to learn not just how to play, but also the right way to attach your strap and use other accessories. Whether you’re a novice or a master of the guitar, it’s definitely worth learning how to properly attach your guitar strap to your guitar.
At Chara, we’ve seen many of our students struggle with their guitar straps here in our music school. Either they’re too loose, or they’re not properly attached. So in this article, we’re going to show you how to properly attach your guitar strap to your guitar so that you can concentrate on what really matters – your music!
How to Attach Your Guitar Strap to Your Dual Button Guitar
How do you put a guitar strap on a guitar? Attaching your guitar strap to your guitar with two buttons can be quite easy. This is because your guitar strap has two holes on each end that can be slipped over your guitar buttons. The first step in learning how to attach your guitar strap to your guitar is to take one end of your guitar strap and slip it over your guitar’s lower button. The lower button of your guitar can be found near the base of your guitar’s body. It’s important to make sure that it’s pushed down so that it can fit comfortably over your guitar button.
The next step is to take the other end of your guitar strap and slip it over your guitar’s top button. The top button of your guitar can be found near your guitar’s neck or your guitar’s horn.
How to Attach Your Guitar Strap to Your Single Button Guitar
In the case where you have a guitar that has a single button, you will then attach one end to the single button, and the other end will be attached around the headstock. Putting on a guitar strap in this way ensures your instrument remains secure and comfortable while you play.
You will start by inserting one end of the guitar strap over the single button at the base of the guitar, as you did in the above configuration. However, for the other end, which usually has the leather tie, you will then insert the end around the headstock, but not too tight so that you end up straining the headstock.
Some straps are provided with a special lace that can be used in the attachment of the strap to the guitar, which is usually useful since you will not end up damaging the guitar. Putting a strap on a guitar with care and using the proper accessories helps protect both your instrument and your playing experience.
Adjusting Your Strap for Comfort and Posture
After you have successfully attached the guitar strap to the guitar, you will then proceed to adjust the strap to the appropriate length. The appropriate positioning of the guitar strap is important since it will help you look neat and keep you in the right posture.
It is suggested that the guitar be placed in a position where the body of the guitar is touching your torso directly, at the same time ensuring that the fretting hand is able to reach the guitar neck easily. You also want to ensure that the strumming hand is able to reach the strings easily. If the guitar is placed low, you will end up slouching, while if it is placed high, you will end up straining your strumming hand.
There is usually a slider that you will use to adjust the strap to the right length, ensuring that you adjust the guitar to a comfortable height, a height which will ensure that you maintain good posture while playing the guitar. Good posture is important because you don’t want to stop playing due to injury or tiredness.
Keep Your Guitar Secure and Play with Confidence
Properly attaching a guitar strap is a small detail that makes a big impact. Putting a guitar strap on a guitar ensures a secure hold and will allow you to concentrate fully on improving your skills without the distraction of a loose strap.
