Entering the tap dancing class studio is always a thrilling experience. The sounds of the rhythmic music and steps can be heard all over the room. If you’re searching for fun tap dance classes, it’s important to know what to expect when it comes to attire. In order to enjoy the class to the fullest extent possible, one has to put on a proper outfit for the occasion.
This is frequently a question raised by newbies at Chara Christian Dance Academy, which teaches both children and adults how to tap. Proper clothes will ensure maximum safety, freedom of movement, and good view for the instructors to assess the body position of each of our dancers. This article should help you choose appropriate attire for tap lessons!
Essential Clothes for Dancing
It is important to start building the dance wardrobe with basic essentials.
Top Options for Tap: T-Shirts, Tank Tops, and Leotards
Choosing a top to wear during the tap class, one needs to remember that the material should be comfortable yet fitted. If you’re wondering what to wear for tap dance class, remember that if you are still learning, we advise wearing a leotard with a t-shirt. Some clients usually feel more comfortable in fitted tank tops or sports clothes. Baggy clothing will prevent the instructors from observing your posture and thus providing useful corrections.
Dance Bottoms: Leggings, Shorts, and Jazz Pants
Legs are the main instrument you use in tap lessons, therefore, it is vital that the bottom clothing be fitting enough not to distract you from dancing and preventing freedom of movement. Tight or stretch leggings, as well as athletic shorts and tights, will be an ideal choice for tap dancing outfits in tap lessons. Jazz pants are also suitable if the hem does not cover the feet.
Perfect Tap Shoes
Shoes are another element of proper tap dance attire for a tap class. Tap shoes are comparable to the guitar or piano for a classical musician in terms of importance and significance for producing sounds. Newbies are advised to begin with comfortable Oxfords. Children are better off wearing Mary Jane style tap shoes due to straps for ease of change and comfort.
Other Essentials
Some additional garments will help you feel more prepared for your class at the studio.
Hair Care and Headwear
Tying your hair back is a good idea for the same reason as the necessity of wearing a t-shirt that shows the neck. We advise you to tie your hair in a braid, ponytail, or bun if it is rather long. If it is shorter, headbands might prove useful.
Layer for Warm-Up
Studio temperatures might seem cooler before your class starts. That’s why it is recommended to put on some layer such as a zip-up or a wrap to protect yourself from coldness until class starts and your body becomes heated.
Water for Staying Hydrated and Dance Bag
As we already mentioned, tap is very energetic. Bringing a water bottle will guarantee that you have enough fluid for hydration. A special dance bag will help you store your shoes, clothes for changing after a class, perhaps your favorite tap dance dress, and a bottle with water.
Clothing to Avoid
Here is a list of items you would rather not wear at the tap class:
- Heavy and thick fabrics: jeans and other types of trousers
- Excessively long clothes that could become a source of danger
- Dangling accessories and jewelry: it may distract you from focusing on your moves and could even get entangled with your dance clothes
Step On the Floor with Ease of Mind
We hope that now you feel confident about what to wear to a tap class. It is amazing to see how our children or adult students reveal their character within a few short lessons. Prepare your stuff and join us at Chara!
