Putting Your Child in Too Many Classes at Once
It’s exciting when your child falls in love with dance, and many studios offer multiple classes to help dancers grow quickly. But more isn’t always better—especially at the beginning.
Only commit to what feels realistic for your family. If you have multiple children, busy schedules, or your dancer is also involved in sports or other activities, it’s okay to start small. One class (maybe two) is often the perfect place to begin.
Give your child time to settle in, build confidence, and discover whether their love for dance continues to grow. More classes can always come later when it makes sense for your child and your family.
Thinking Your Child Needs a Friend in Class
We all feel more comfortable walking into something new with a friend beside us. But one of the beautiful things about dance is the opportunity to build brand-new friendships.
Encourage your child to introduce themselves and connect with classmates. Chances are, many of the other dancers are feeling nervous too! Dance classes often become a place where kids form lasting friendships and learn valuable social skills.
And parents—you’re included in this too! Instead of scrolling your phone in the lobby, take a moment to chat with the moms and dads around you. You never know—your next great friendship might begin at dance class too.
Skipping Class Too Often
After a long school day, it’s tempting to stay home—especially during cold winter months or toward the end of the school year when everyone feels tired and busy. But consistency matters in dance.
A dancer’s confidence, friendships, and physical progress all grow through regular attendance. Missing class occasionally is unavoidable, especially for illness or important family events, but try not to make skipping a habit.
Showing up consistently helps dancers feel more prepared, capable, and connected in class—and that confidence carries over into every performance.
Choosing a Studio That Doesn’t Match Your Family’s Values
Every dance studio is different. Some are highly competitive, some focus on recreation, and others prioritize character, community, or creativity. That’s why it’s so important to research studios carefully before enrolling.
Don’t hesitate to ask questions like:
- What kind of music and costumes are used?
- What are the instructors’ backgrounds and experience?
- What is the studio culture like?
- What values are important to the studio owner?
- Are recital dates and major events communicated clearly?
- What safety training and precautions are in place?
The best studio for your child is one that aligns with your family’s priorities and creates an environment where your dancer can thrive.
Dropping Mid-Year
A full dance season is a big commitment. Most programs run throughout the school year and end with a recital or showcase in the spring. Somewhere along the way, your child may feel tired, discouraged, or tempted to quit—and honestly, parents may feel the same way.
But finishing what you start is an important life lesson. Dance teaches perseverance, responsibility, and the joy that comes from working hard toward a goal.
There’s something special about stepping on stage at the end of the season, knowing you stayed committed and gave your best effort. That moment of pride and accomplishment is worth pushing through the difficult days.
Not Letting Your Child Explore Other Interests
Dance can be an amazing part of childhood—but it doesn’t have to be the only part. Childhood is a time for exploration, growth, and discovering new passions.
If your child wants to try soccer, theater, art, or another activity, that’s okay! Exploring different interests helps children discover their unique gifts and passions. And if they decide to come back to dance later, the studio will still be there.
A healthy dance environment supports well-rounded kids and celebrates the process of children learning who they are and what they love most.
