What to Expect in a Dance Class at Chara Christian Dance Academy
Whether your dancer is 18 months old or 18 years old, starting something new can feel exciting—and sometimes a little intimidating! Knowing what to expect can make that first class feel much more comfortable for both dancers and parents.
At Chara Christian Dance Academy, we want every student to walk through our doors feeling welcomed, encouraged, and excited to learn. While every class looks a little different depending on the dancer’s age, level, and style, here’s what a typical class experience at Chara looks like.
Arriving at the Studio
When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by our Customer Care Team at the front desk. We encourage families to arrive a few minutes early so dancers have plenty of time to get settled, change into the appropriate shoes, use the restroom if needed, and feel comfortable before class begins.
When it’s time for class, your child’s teacher will greet students at the classroom door and personally welcome them into the room.
Dancers will place their belongings in their designated area before joining their teacher and classmates to begin class together.
Starting Class With Connection
One of the ways we create a welcoming classroom environment is through our opening circle.
Teachers use this time to take attendance, ask a fun get-to-know-you question, give students an opportunity to connect with one another, and open class in prayer.
This simple routine helps students feel seen, valued, and comfortable before instruction begins. It also gives dancers a chance to build relationships with their classmates and creates a sense of community within the classroom.
Warming Up and Building Dance Skills
Once class begins, teachers guide students through a structured, age-appropriate warm-up and stretch to prepare their bodies for movement.
From there, instruction focuses on the skills outlined in our curriculum for that specific class and level. Depending on the style and age group, dancers may work on:
- Foundational movement patterns
- Dance technique
- Across-the-floor exercises
- Coordination, rhythm, and balance
- Creative movement activities
- Choreography
- Age- and level-appropriate skill progressions
Our curriculum is designed to help students build skills over time, giving them a strong foundation while continuing to challenge them as they grow.
Learning More Than Dance Steps
Parents are often surprised by just how much children learn in a dance class beyond the actual dance steps.
Throughout class, students are also practicing how to listen, follow directions, take turns, work with others, persevere through challenges, and confidently try new things.
Of course, they’re developing dance technique, coordination, musicality, balance, and movement skills along the way. But some of the most meaningful growth we see happens through the confidence, responsibility, friendships, and life skills dancers develop in the classroom.
For us, dance is about so much more than learning choreography.
Ending Class on a Positive Note
As class comes to a close, teachers may guide dancers through a cool-down before gathering together one final time.
During this closing time, students may review what they learned, celebrate accomplishments, recognize positive behavior, ask questions, and hear about what they’ll be working toward in future classes.
After a closing prayer, teachers dismiss students back to their parents—ready to return the following week and continue building their skills, confidence, and friendships.
What If We’re Taking a Trial Class?
If your dancer is joining us for a trial class, there’s one extra stop before you head home!
After class, stop by the front desk to check out with our Customer Care Team. You’ll have an opportunity to let us know how class went, ask any questions you may have, receive your free trial gift, and learn more about officially enrolling in your dancer’s next class.
Trying something new doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. From the moment your dancer walks through our doors to the moment they leave class, our goal is to create an experience where they feel welcomed, encouraged, challenged, and cared for.
